- What are the requirements
for taking the NC Board licensure examination?
Baccalaureate degree, D.C. Degree from a CCE accredited
college with completion of a minimum of 4200 hours,
successful completion of parts I,II,& III (including
physiotherapy), and IV (minimum score of 475) of the
National Board. (GS 90-143, Administrative codeT21:10 .0203)

- When can I take the Board
examination for licensure?
A North Carolina Jurisprudence test is given to all eligible candidates
the fourth Saturday in January, April, July and October each year. All applications and
credentials must be in the office of the secretary 15 days prior to the
examination. (Administrative code,T21:10.0202(c), .0203(b) )

- Do you accept Part IV?
Under what circumstances?
Part IV of National Board of Chiropractic Examiners, with a minimum
score of 475 is
required for eligibility for licensure.

- What tests will I have to

- Do you have reciprocity
agreements with other states?
NC offers an application to those license holders from
states whose licensing requirements are equal to or
greater than those of NC A reciprocity form of
verification must be completed by the chiropractic
examiners office from the state from which you are
applying. This may be obtained by requesting the same
from the NC Board office. (GS 90-143.1), or from our Download Center

- Do I Have to have a B.S.
degree?
The requirement is for any baccalaureate degree not
specifically a B.S. (GS 90-143 (b)(2))

- Does the baccalaureate
degree have to be issued prior to graduation from
chiropractic college?
No, but it must be conferred prior to being eligible for
licensure. (GS 90-143 (b)(2))

- Will I be able to review my
tests?
Yes, But you may not review with an examiner. A review of the
examination must be submitted within 20 days of notification Administrative codeT21:10.0203(f))

- How much does it cost to
take the exam?
$300.00 (GS 90-149)

- Will the board review their
scoring of my tests?
Yes, after receiving a timely written request.

- Will you accept my foreign
credentials?
Only if the under graduate education was received from an
institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.
S. Department of Education and the Chiropractic education
was received in a college recognized by the C.C.E. or its
equivalent. (GS 90-143
(b)(2,3)).

- How much continuing
education do I need to renew the license each year?
Two (2) days, which has been defined as 24 hours, of
approved education (GS
90-155,
Administrative code T21:10.0205 (c)(1))

- What is acceptable
continuing education?
- Postgraduate
education that deals with information that is
within the scope of chiropractic (excluding
practice building, insurance, etc.
- Seminars that have
been reviewed and approved by the board.
- No Practice
Management programs.

- Must I renew my license
each year?
Yes, on or before the first Tuesday after the first
Monday in January in each year after a license has been
issued. (GS 90-155)

- How much does it cost to
renew my license?
$150.00 (GS 90-155)

- Can I get an inactive
license?
No, not as such, a doctor who is retired and does not
treat any patients may keep the license without license
renewal education as long as the renewal fee is paid. (GS 90-155)

- If my license is lapsed,
how do I get them reactivated?
By making application and successfully completing the SPEC examination
of the National Board and NC Jurisprudence examination (Administrative code T21:10.0205 (e))

reciprocity candidates?

- Can I get a license any
time during the year?
A license may be obtained during the scheduled dates.

- What part of my record is
open to the public?

provided on the initial application, any final agency
decision regarding individual files.

- Are chiropractors
considered expert witnesses in NC?
Yes. (GS

- Can chiropractors practice
in hospitals?
Yes. (GS 90-145)

- Can chiropractors certify
to disability?
Yes, within the scope of chiropractic practice. (GS 58-50-30)

- Must I have taken all parts
of the National Board before I can apply to NC?
Yes, Parts I, II, III (including physiotherapy) and IV(T21:10.0203 (c))

- Can I take the NC licensure
exam before I graduate from chiropractic college?
Yes, if the applicant can furnish proof of graduation or
exhibit a diploma within 60 days of the examination.
Licensure is withheld until the DC degree is confirmed. (GS 90-143 (b)(3))

- Will I need to submit proof
of education in physiotherapy?
No verification of education is necessary, however,
successful completion the National Board's test in
physiotherapy must be submitted.

- How long after the exam
will it be before I get my results?
Results are submitted to candidates as quickly as
possible. Usually within a thirty (30) day period
following the examination.

- How do I find out what
license renewal education is approved by the NC board?

- Can I use acupuncture in my
chiropractic practice?
Yes, acupuncture may be practiced under the DC license after required
education and certification has been completed. However, a Doctor of Chiropractic may not hold themselves
out to be acupuncturists unless they have also passed the
state acupuncture exam.

- Can a doctor of
chiropractic utilize physical therapy modalities in their
practice?
Yes, however, the chiropractor may not advertise himself
as a physical therapist unless they have also passed the
state Physical Therapy board.

- What state or federal
business numbers and/or registrations do I need to
practice?
- A State privilege
license is necessary, and may be obtained from
the North Carolina Department of Revenue
- A Federal ID number
should be obtained from the Internal Revenue
Service.
- Other billing and
provider numbers may be applicable depending upon
ones practice intentions.

- Do I need to contact the
board when I incorporate my office?
Yes, there are forms which must be executed by the Board
prior to submission to the Secretary of State.

- Can I advertise "free
services" or "reduced rate" services?
Yes. However, the advertisement must include the
appropriate disclaimer as required by GS 90-154.1(b) and also the usual fee for
the service being offered at a free or reduced rate. (GS 90-154 (b)(13))

- Can I refer my patients to
a massage therapist?
Yes. Further, when these activities are billed from a
chiropractic office, the massage therapists must be an
employee of the chiropractic physician.

- Does an employee have to
have more than on the job training to take x-rays in a
chiropractic office?
Yes, all employees of a chiropractic office who perform
activities involving the production of X-rays must
complete a 50-hour course approved by the Board. Further,
they must pass a proficiency examination administered
under the authority of the Board. (GS 90-143.2, Administrative code T21:10.0203 (d))

- Does NC accept the SPEC
exam in place of the State exam?
The SPEC exam (of the National Board) is accepted for specific candidates providing all other requirements
are in order.

- Can I be licensed anytime
if I have an acceptable score on Part IV?
License are issued at scheduled times.

- Does the State have a
"grandfather clause" for those who do not
have all parts of the National Board?
Yes. 21 NCAC 10.0203

- When can a successful
candidates begin to practice after the exam?
As quickly as they are notified that they were successful
and given a license number.

- When will license renewal
applications be mailed?
Renewal applications are mailed to the last reported
address during the first two (2) weeks in December.

meet?
Quarterly, or at other times when warranted

- How long are applications
kept on file?
Applications filed with the Board and the candidate fails
to appear for the examination process will be held at the
Board office for a period of two (2) years after which
they will be disposed of.

- Can I practice under
another chiropractic physician's license until I am
licensed? What am I allowed to do?
An individual may not practice chiropractic until a
license has been issued. However, an individual may be
employed by a licensed chiropractic physician. Activities
such as making x-rays may be performed, but, the employee
may not interpret them. Examinations may be performed,
but the employee may not offer a diagnosis. The
utilization of physical therapy modalities is permissible
providing it is under the supervision of the licentiate.
No manipulations should be performed by an unlicensed
individual.

- Can chiropractors do
physical exams for schools?
It is within the scope of chiropractic to perform
physical examinations. However, statutes state that
school examinations be performed and signed by a MD.

- What procedures are
necessary to participate in a preceptorship program?
North Carolina participates in a limited preceptorship
program. The school from which the preceptor is attending
should submit to the NC Board the name of the
chiropractic physician with whom the preceptor wishes to
associate. If the proposed doctor has no record of any
disciplinary action against his license, the
preceptorship is approved. If there has been action taken
against the license, the chiropractic college is
notified.

- If I have a NC license, but
practice elsewhere, do the seminars I attend have to be
approved?
All education must be approved. If the State in which the
licentiate practices approves the seminars, NC will
accept the approval. When practicing in North Carolina,
education must be approved by the NC Board.

- How do I file a complaint
against a chiropractic license holder?
Call the state Board office at (704) 793-1342, ask for a
complaint form. Complete the complaint form as requested
and have it sworn and notarized.
